Mmmmm…morning coffee! Add a bagel and cream cheese and your morning is off to a good start. Add the smiles of Kingsway’s junior high students and you’ll have yourself a great day!
On this particular morning, an extra task is added to the usual coffee making and bagel shmearing: Halloween-themed labels are being placed on water bottles that will be offered with other refreshments at the Halloween festivities. Amaal is working on those labels (see photo) along with Josh, who was a bit camera shy.
Eileen Sullivan works with seven students in this class. She, with the help of teacher assistant Sharon Thornton, also coordinates office duties for the students to work on. They run copies of flyers and deliver them to classrooms and place them in staff mailboxes. The students also deliver laminating throughout the building.
They enjoy all of these jobs, but one in particular seems to be the most sought after. “I would have to say that all of the students enjoy shredding!” says Eileen. Most of the
students, she says, are fairly independent with this task.
Also a popular job: data entry. Students enter customer numbers into the Computers@Work program, which is from the Attainment Company.
Before anything happens, however, each day starts with a morning meeting. The calendar is done and the schedule is reviewed along with current events. And, most notably, each week–when there is a game–the Eagles get some Kingsway love with the singing the Eagles’ Fight Song!
In addition to their cafe and office duties, the students work on typical classroom lessons. “We are finishing up a unit on the human body,” explains Eileen. “We learned about all the body systems, like digestive, nervous system, skeleton, muscles and respiratory.
“The students also enjoy Go Noodle, which is a movement and music brain break that we take everyday after lunch. It’s another opportunity to move, follow directions and to have fun learning.”
